In the early 20th century, France had a system of army conscription. Only those who were physically fit could enlist as soldiers. During World War I, many conscientious objectors enlisted in the army and were commanded to do the jobs that only the most physically fit men could do. Some of them refused and were court-martialled and sentenced to prison.
One of these men was William Boelhower. He and his fellow prisoners had no weapons and were locked up in a room for three years without food or water. Even though they never fought, William Boelhower died from his imprisonment because he refused to eat or drink anything, even when his fellow prisoners shared their rations with him.
This is an example of how our actions can affect other people’s freedom.
